Realizing the Spirit of Wipro - My First Day Experience

It was one of those early mornings which bring about an air of apprehension along with it.

A long queue of tense would-be IT professionals were gathered in front of a office in Guindy, Chennai, waiting for their chance to be allowed inside. It was the 26th of July 2006, the office had an emblem of a huge rainbow-colored sunflower. The group was allowed in at sharp 8:30 am and I for the first time entered the premises of Wipro Technologies.
I had been waiting for this day for almost one year now, after I was selected in campus interview. The moment I entered the office there seemed to be something soothing and my nerves were calming down. The tension and apprehension that was a part of me a few moments ago had disappeared.
That was one day in 2006 which changed my life and I had become a member of Wipro family. Today after being here for almost two years now, I have realized the mystery of that soothing experience - it is the Spirit of Wipro, as we call it. The Spirit of Wipro is quite simple – Intensity to Win, Acting with sensitivity and Unyielding Integrity.

The work culture here is really friendly and makes working in such a demanding profession rather easy. The way the management takes care of the employees here has amazed me - be it facility management or personal issues like transfer to hometown. I have seen friends of mine leaving other companies on personal issues such as relocation and other things, but this is not the case with us in Wipro as our problems are always addressed by the top management, promptly.

Gateway to Technology

I got a new life from Wipro Technologies - an opportunity to explore the world with world-class standards. In my company, I was the youngest employee to propose to start a new team for robotic technology. Moreover I had filed a US Patent with Wipro Technologies in the field of Image Processing and Robotics. The project which was created in my final semester (during college) was approved by Azim Premji for Technology Implementation. After years of hard work, now I’m recognized world wide as a Roboticist! [Pronounced roh-bot-uh-sist]

I have hands-on experience in embedded systems end-to-end development for mobile robots in manufacturing industry, wireless systems, etc. Having won the Expert’s Award in Innovation from Wipro Technologies, I’m supremely enthusiastic to face more and more challenges in my organization. I’ve worked with case studies, business reports, strategy reports and market studies, which will help in transferring technology to business solutions. My ambition is to be the Chief Technology Officer for Innovation and Robotics in Wipro.

The credit goes to MES Engineering College and Wipro Technologies for providing me the launching ground to be creative, innovative and more thoughtful in life. With the help of advanced facilities, outstanding labs and infrastructure, I was able to innovate new ideas for the welfare of mankind. It is from the campus placement, that I got another opportunity to explore the world of corporate life.

I’m proud to me a Wiproite and a MES’ian!!

Joining Wipro Technologies!

Written Test! Technical Interview! HR Interview! Each round had in its own way, challenged me to prove my mettle. But then, hard work and determination do not go in vain. I knew it was my day. And there you go! I came out with flying colors and at the end of the day was given the appointment letter along with a big “Congratulations!”

I received the news of the job offer like a starry-eyed kid who jumps at the sight of a colorful balloon or an ice cream. Yes! I made it to Wipro Technologies - a company that stood out from the rest because it brings out the creative side of all its employees which is evident from its tagline “Applying Thought”. With lots of dreams in my eyes, I looked forward to joining the company.

The D-Day – i.e., the DOJ (Date of Joining) arrived very soon. Carrying a lot of expectations in mind, I set out on my way to Wipro. The first five minutes made me realize that the wait for coming here was well worth it. I was completely bowled over by the world-class infrastructure and the friendly atmosphere that greeted me when I stepped in.

And then, it was time for our PRP and FRP – the training sessions. It was as though college life had begun all over again. All the apprehensions that I had regarding corporate life got swept away in a second. It was a great learning experience to study together and interact with people from all over India. I got exposed to different cultures, their languages and traditions and yes, I made lots of friends for life!

The atmosphere was highly competitive and brought out the best in us. I performed well in the exams and was one of the toppers. It was awesome! My journey in Wipro turned to be a great one. And hey! That was not the end of it. There were more surprises in store! It was time for the farewell party. We had a lot of fun and the toppers were awarded exciting prizes. The whole experience was really fantastic and will remain stored in the lanes of my memory forever.

I was put into a project very soon. I clearly remember the day I had to go and report to my Project Manager. I was really nervous as I expected someone who was like the stereotypical “Boss” character. But then, Wipro never fails to offer sweet surprises. What I saw was completely opposite to what I had expected! My PM was ultra cool, extremely friendly and helpful. So were my colleagues. Though I was the only fresher in our team of 23, everybody received me with great warmth. It was just the beginning……….

Till date, they continue to encourage me and help me out in every stage…..

From then on, it’s been amazing, exciting and challenging – all at the same time. Tough tasks, deadlines, appreciation from clients have all become an integral part of life. I have learnt many things like working under pressure, handling difficult tasks with ease and it has undoubtedly made me a better person. At Wipro, good work is always recognized and paid off in the form of appreciation from clients and appraisals as well J.

Hmm, thinking that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy? Well, Wipro takes care of that too. Regular team outings, cultural festivals, DJ Nites are a part and parcel of the work culture here.

So guys, if you want to prove yourself to the world and at the same time, develop and grow as a person, this is the place TO BE!

Welcome to Wipro Technologies! All the Best to all of you out there. Hope you have a great journey here, just the way I did.

It was June 2006. Me ready to start a wonderful career with Wipro… The first thing which caught my mind was the Ambience of the Office… WOW!! What an office I am going to work… This was my first expression…

The environment is Beautiful… Work Environment is encouraging and excellent…
The support I got from my seniors during the initial part gave me the confidence and knowledge to progress. I was motivated to become an expert in my domain as I see a lot of them working with me. Moreover, the recognition and appreciation I get from my seniors have made me more confident and ready to accept challenges.
Still moving with the same motivation and confidence to move further…

Life @ Wipro

A glimpse of Wipro’s rainbow flower tells you everything about Wipro’s corporate identity i. e. Unity in Diversity. True to the Letter! I clearly remember my first brush with this new world when I was given a cool ID card that opened sensor controlled doors!

After the joining formalities we were given details of the training that lasted for around two and a half months. It was conducted in two phases: Fresher’s Readiness Program (FRP) for generic skills and Project Readiness Program (PRP) for development of domain skills. FRP was meant to augment everybody with basics of C programming, as we had people from all branches of engineering. The entire batch was split into sub-batches to maintain a proper teacher-student ratio. Everyday we had theory sessions in the morning and hands-on in the afternoon. Post FRP, we were split into domain specific batches for PRP where mine was Unix. In the grueling PRP we were exposed to the nitty-gritty details of the Unix system. The real fun part was the ten-day Real-Life lab towards the completion where experts mentored us in developing mini-projects from scratch covering all phases of SDLC, which they evaluated towards the end. I was simply wonder-stuck at their amazing coding and debugging skills reflecting years of sheer practice.

I was rewarded with Strand Bookstall’s gift vouchers with a validity of two years for commendable performance in training. Yes, I have still not been able to exhaust it even after getting books for my friends!!

After training, I was relocated to Pune and got into a project in Embedded systems. Within months, I had the opportunity to look at a number of widely used commercial RTOSs. Besides, I was also involved in talks with some of their creators sitting overseas! Of course, it was through teleconferencing.

In Wipro, we have a dedicated team of experts (comprising the Foundation Competency Group nick-named FCG) that takes care of building competence in all areas be it programming languages or the art of writing programs itself and each one of us has to periodically clear the FCG assessments in his/her area of work as Wipro believes in Leadership through Competency. Besides, Premji himself keeps reminding us of essential qualities for self-development.

Life at Wipro is fun-filled and fulfilling. It is an organization of non-stop celebrations be it monthly birthday parties, project success, periodic get-togethers like People’s Week, Spirit of Wipro runs, trekking expeditions, cultural festivals and what not. Wipro has also given me some great friends.

I look forward to a long association with world’s largest third party R&D services organization, namely Wipro.

My Journey in Wipro

Now as you stumbled upon my story, let me unfold my wonderful journey in Wipro as honestly as possible. I thought college was fulfilling and fun, but lo and behold - Wipro was all that and much.

I joined Wipro Hyderabad as a trainee. The standard of Wipro training is extremely high and we were under constant fear of failing in the final exam. But due to painstaking mentoring by the faculties and some amount of effort from our side, most of us finally managed to do quite well in the PRP.

I carry very fond memories of the training period. Our batch comprised of students from all over India, from Kashmir to Coimbatore and from Uttar Pradesh to West Bengal. And this was the first time I came across the true diversity of India and made friends who are so different from my own culture. Project Readiness Program was an eye opener as it bridged the gap from being a Student to a Professional.

Having a decent result in PRP, I have been privileged to work in some challenging modules and I must say at the beginning it was not easy for me. But I had my mangers constantly monitoring, guiding and supporting me which finally led me achieving the Annual Excellence Award (Prodigy award) under the telecom domain across all the development centers of Wipro.

Some people told me that life of software engineer is very boring. On the very first day of my project my manager invited me for a late night movie show. In my first year I just followed one of the oldest principles in work culture – “work hard and party harder”.
