Life @ Wipro

A glimpse of Wipro’s rainbow flower tells you everything about Wipro’s corporate identity i. e. Unity in Diversity. True to the Letter! I clearly remember my first brush with this new world when I was given a cool ID card that opened sensor controlled doors!

After the joining formalities we were given details of the training that lasted for around two and a half months. It was conducted in two phases: Fresher’s Readiness Program (FRP) for generic skills and Project Readiness Program (PRP) for development of domain skills. FRP was meant to augment everybody with basics of C programming, as we had people from all branches of engineering. The entire batch was split into sub-batches to maintain a proper teacher-student ratio. Everyday we had theory sessions in the morning and hands-on in the afternoon. Post FRP, we were split into domain specific batches for PRP where mine was Unix. In the grueling PRP we were exposed to the nitty-gritty details of the Unix system. The real fun part was the ten-day Real-Life lab towards the completion where experts mentored us in developing mini-projects from scratch covering all phases of SDLC, which they evaluated towards the end. I was simply wonder-stuck at their amazing coding and debugging skills reflecting years of sheer practice.

I was rewarded with Strand Bookstall’s gift vouchers with a validity of two years for commendable performance in training. Yes, I have still not been able to exhaust it even after getting books for my friends!!

After training, I was relocated to Pune and got into a project in Embedded systems. Within months, I had the opportunity to look at a number of widely used commercial RTOSs. Besides, I was also involved in talks with some of their creators sitting overseas! Of course, it was through teleconferencing.

In Wipro, we have a dedicated team of experts (comprising the Foundation Competency Group nick-named FCG) that takes care of building competence in all areas be it programming languages or the art of writing programs itself and each one of us has to periodically clear the FCG assessments in his/her area of work as Wipro believes in Leadership through Competency. Besides, Premji himself keeps reminding us of essential qualities for self-development.

Life at Wipro is fun-filled and fulfilling. It is an organization of non-stop celebrations be it monthly birthday parties, project success, periodic get-togethers like People’s Week, Spirit of Wipro runs, trekking expeditions, cultural festivals and what not. Wipro has also given me some great friends.

I look forward to a long association with world’s largest third party R&D services organization, namely Wipro.

    Yes, very well described.
Even I remember how amazed I was when some doors beeped and welcomed inside while others shooed me away.
Competency development, well has been taken care of lately but I think there’s more of a need for active Knowledge sharing, which I believe is a very fast route to build competency.

The first lesson that you people will learn after entering Wipro is not to call your seniors as Sir, rather call them by their names.

  10. 10 Pradeep Kumar Das

With due regards I want to state that after go through your experience I am too confident. I am selected for Wipro for joining in 2008 batch. Before that I was little nervous about wipro that how can I involve in corporate world. Thanks to you providing information about your experience and also about training.

  11. 11 Sujit

    hellooo Bro…
thanks for sharing ur valuable experience… we get to learn from ur experience…
    Best of Luck….

Hi Pradeep. Just stick to the basics. C, Data structures, programming with an OS API interface (especially linux since the entire source is open to you and you can actually check how things happen behind the scenes)

Knowledge of C / Java/ C# would be an added advantage but hey..just chill! The training is good enough and whatever it is on, you can sail through smoothly if you’re regular. Staying ve is the key thing :-) !!

And yes, just call me Sanat as Anurag mentioned!

  17. 17 sulthan

Hi Mr.Sanat i am Sulthan BE(Electronics and Instrumentation) awaiting the call letter from wipro and i am given the date of joining as jan 2008.
I heard that there are competency exams in Wipro held during the training sessions, and people who fail to get more than 80 percent are thrown away from Wipro. is that a true information?

And will it be easy to score high in the assessments conducted during the training sessions even for a student from a discipline other than computer science and IT?

hope the training session will improve the soft skills of each and every cadet of Wipro from various disciplines. Thank you….

Hi Raj, WASE is a four-year program targetting B. Sc. graduates. For B. Techs Wipro has tie-ups with institutes like BITS Pilani, IIM Bangalore etc. for pursuing M.S./MBA. Since your background is Biotechnology, I am not sure which bracket you would fall in. You can always explore once you join Wipro. chill !!

hello Sanat. Thanks for sharing ur exp.I have been recruited by wipro for the 2008 batch(B.E).I am basically a person who has escaped learning the basics of c,java etc.Donno how much I can show my efficiency in it..Is the work in Wipro full of such programmings for the freshers or can they,by any chance enter other domains like HR,TED or any other field.Or should I take it seriouly and go for computer classes..plz brief me…

  21. 21 Narayan Shrawagi

    Hi Sanat,
I am final year information technology student of SSGMCE,Shegaon(MAH).Thanks for Ur valuable suggestion about training.I think all freshers will definitely get benifited from this.Congrats for Ur inspiring performance in training.
One thing that i had not understood is that “What is generic skills and domain skills? What are various areas of domain skills(like Ur was Unix)?”
ALL THE BEST for freshers joining WIPRO in 2008.

Hi Somesh, The fact that you were recruited by Wipro itself shows that you have potential. In Wipro, we have a system of “Wings Within” to help you get into your roles of choice. Since you have done a B. E. I am assuming that you were chosen for a technical role and if so, you would be expected to show competence in at least one programming language (c, c , c#, java) in the initial stages. But we do keep getting internal advertisements for TED/ HR positions and getting into such a role should not be a problem in the long run.

Hi Narayan, Generic skills predominantly refer to C programming, data structures & algorithms, concepts of software engineering etc. and domain skills are specific to the nature of business you’ll be working in e. g. “Unix” for embedded/telecom systems, “Windows” for writing say windows based device drivers, Java/.NET for financial software services. These are just examples. We often see interdependencies. A JVM may be running on a Unix system. Then you may then need to know Java elementary Unix :)

    Hi Sulthan,

It is very much possible for a Non-CS/IT guy to get good marks. I would just advise you to start developing your C/C programming skills now itself and get comfortable with data structures. Everything will go fine. Best of Luck!

Hi sanat,, I have a few queries..

How wipro support higher studies?I mean would like to do either MBA or MTech after joining wipro. What all facilities will be supplied by wipro?

Another one is that i heard that a few of the MNCs are giving such a huge work load to freshers that they wont get much time even to relax.does wipro belong to that list?Whats the work time at wipro?

    regds….,vkt

hi sir what is the importance of frp ?should i take a serious preparation of it?ll there be any test on it after going to wipro?

    Hi vkt,

Wipro has already anounced a 3 yr Mtech program for the 2006 batch of joinees in collaboration with BITS Pilani with specialization in a couple of domains related to Networking,Telecom,Embedded sys. etc. covering around 300-400 people across 3 to 4 locations. More such batches are expected to start later this year. This is probably the very answer you were looking for. :) Besides we have MBA programs in collaboration with IIM Banagalore, Symbiosis etc. Of course, you could also take a sabbatical (leave) for persuing higher studies after completing two years of service.

As for workload, the only thing that I would say is workload is a relative term. If two people (first one likes the work and the second doesn’t) are asked to do that work for say 12 hrs, the first one would say I learnt a lot today and I’d like to do this tomorrow and the second would say I was loaded with too much work and I can’t take that much load again. The important thing is to love whatever you do otherwise the going could be tough…

    The official timings are 8:30AM - 6:00PM

    Best of luck!!

    Hi thripuranath,

Doing well in frp is important as it creates the first impression in the organization and performance during training is also considered for future opportunities within Wipro. Do prepare for it, but take it easy…It isn’t difficult to crack these tests if you’re regular and well prepared. All the Best:)

    Hi Shweta,

First, Welcome to Wipro!! As for foreign languages you’ll have so many options that you’ll have a tough time choosing one.
Better decide on one before joining! Haha… Just Joking!!

A couple of my friends have already undergone training in French and German, within Wipro while being in projects. Today we received a mail for a five-and-a-half-month training program in japanese, called Shimpo. I am sure you’ll find many more.

    Hi Dharmaraj,

As far as I know, Wipro Technologies caters to business involving software/ hardware (electronics) development/maintenance. This could include software controlled mechanical system. We have people from all backgrounds including mechanical, chemical, metallurgical engineering, ofcourse working as software engineers after undergoing training and they are doing well. Hope I cleared your doubts.
